the ritual of smudging August 01 2014

Smudging is a cleansing technique used for many years. This Native North American ritual is simply a way of cleansing oneself of negative energies and creating a sense of peace and harmony in the body, as well as in the home or space around you.

What you will need:

a sage stick

a large feather

a shell or fire proof bowl

matches & a candle

To begin, light the candle with the match. Use the candle to light one end of your smudge stick. Hold it in the flame until the whole end is well lit.

Gently fan the smudge stick to extinguish the flame and it should begin to smolder and smoke. Place the smudge stick in the shell and place the shell on the ground.

Smudging yourself or another:

Fan the swirls of smoke around your body from head to toe and also fan the smoke with the large feather.

You may want to speak an intention or a suggestion for the smudging as you do it. Repeat this process with your guests as they enter the space at a ritual, ceremony or special event.

Smudging a room or space:

Light the smudge stick as suggested above, and walk about the perimeter, giving special attention to the corners and the places behind doors. You can also fan the smoke throughout the room with the large feather.
